About Shelby County Court Records

Court records in Shelby County are spread across several offices - the Circuit Court Clerk, the Chancery Court Clerk and Master, the Criminal Court Clerk, the Probate Court Clerk, the General Sessions Court, and the Shelby County Sheriff. Finding the right office on the first try is half the battle. We built this site so you can land on the right portal, address, or phone number without bouncing between government websites.

Why We Built This Site

Tennessee gives the public broad access to court records under the Tennessee Public Records Act (T.C.A. ยง 10-7-503). The hard part is figuring out which office holds the file you want. Shelby County uses a split clerk structure, and each court handles a distinct category of cases. The Circuit Court Clerk handles most civil cases, divorces, personal injury suits, and name changes. The Chancery Court and its Clerk and Master cover equity matters, tax sales, replevin, and some divorces. The Criminal Court Clerk manages felony cases. General Sessions Court handles misdemeanors, traffic, and smaller civil suits. Probate Court - through its own Probate Court Clerk - covers wills, estates, guardianship, and conservatorship. The County Clerk handles marriage licenses, vehicle tags, and business filings, but not court case files. The Shelby County Sheriff's Office runs the jail roster and active warrants. Add the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security for driver and vehicle records, and the picture gets crowded fast. We pull together the contact details, search portals, fee schedules, and request steps for each of these offices into one place.

What You Will Find Here

What We Cannot Do

This is a privately run reference site. We have no connection to any Tennessee court, clerk's office, sheriff's office, or state agency. There are real limits to what we can help with:

  • We cannot file paperwork or send records requests on your behalf
  • We cannot issue certified copies of any court document or vital record
  • We cannot give legal advice or explain how a specific case applies to you
  • We cannot guarantee that every phone number, fee, or address listed on this site is current right now

Only the issuing court or government office can provide a certified copy with an official seal. We can point you to the right office, but the document has to come from them.

Search Partners

Some pages on this site include search boxes powered by third-party providers. Those companies set their own pricing and run their own services. When you use one of those tools and it leads to a paid signup, we may earn a referral fee. That revenue helps keep this site free for visitors. We do not control what those tools charge or what shows up in their results.

Keeping Information Current

Clerk offices move. Hours change. Phone numbers get reassigned. We update pages as we hear about changes, but gaps happen. Before you drive to a courthouse in Memphis, call ahead first.
